The “X” markings in a felt cowboy hat indicate how much beaver fur vs rabbit fur content is included in the fur blend used to make the cowboy hat. The more beaver fur in the fur blend, the higher the “X” marking for that cowboy hat.

So What is X Quality Anyway?

The quick answer is that X quality refers to the quality of the material used in the making of the hat. X quality can be applied to both Felt and Straw hats.

In the case of Felt Hats a higher X quality number indicates the use of a better quality material and a higher percentage of premium material, usually fur, content. For example our Legacy 100X is made with 100% beaver fur and the result is our finest, most supple, and luxurious felt hat.

In the case of Straw hats, X quality refers to the width of the straw reed being used as well as the weave. A tighter weave with a thinner straw reed will have a higher X quality and yield a higher quality hat.

It’s important to note that while X quality is used across the industry, there is no industry standard when it comes to X quality numbers as they relate to either the percentage of premium material used or the actual quality of the material used so always double check the material content.

Some straw cowboy hats also include the “X” marking. The higher the “X” marking the better quality of the straw cowboy hat. This could mean by amount of weaving in a square inch, quality of straw, or detail in the straw weaving pattern
